Warner Bros Studios Leavesden's Mega Expansion: A Game Changer for UK Jobs 23-Sept-2023

In a significant boost to the UK's film and TV production industry, the Warner Bros studios known for producing the iconic Harry Potter film series are set for a major expansion. The development, expected to be completed by 2027, will add a substantial 400,000 sq ft (37,000 sq metres) to Warner Bros Studios Leavesden (WBSL), creating 4,000 jobs and injecting over £200 million into the UK economy. This expansion comes as a ray of hope amid challenging times for the UK's screen industry. Hollywood strikes and a decline in commissions for domestic productions have raised concerns within the industry. Simon Robinson, the Chief Operating Officer of Warner Bros Discovery Studios, expressed his excitement, saying, "Warner Bros Studios Leavesden is globally recognized for its exceptional soundstages and facilities, and with this planned expansion adding significant capacity and capabilities, it will be home to even more incredible storytelling for both film and television projects."

Warner Bros Studios Leavesden has a rich history, famously serving as the production home for the Harry Potter franchise and drawing in tourists for studio tours. While the expansion has been eagerly anticipated, it had also raised concerns among local residents. Notably, two years ago, Hollywood's Sunset Studios, known for productions like "La La Land," "Zoolander," and the X-Men franchise, announced its decision to make WBSL its primary base outside the US. With the addition of ten new sound stages, production capacity is set to grow by over 50%. The expansion will commence early next year, aiming for completion in 2027. This development will increase the studio's total stage count from 19 to 29 and expand overall production space from 1.14 million to 1.78 million sq ft. Chancellor Jeremy Hunt, who met with Warner CEO David Zaslav in Los Angeles to mark the announcement, highlighted the significance of Warner Bros Discovery's ambitious plan, stating, "It is a huge vote of confidence in the UK, creating thousands of jobs and growing our economy. British-made entertainment will continue to delight and entertain global audiences."

Notable productions like "Barbie," "House of the Dragon," and the upcoming "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom" have used WBSL's sound stages, underlining its importance in the world of film and TV. As the UK broadcasting industry faces challenges such as Hollywood strikes and reduced budgets due to declining advertiser spending, the expansion of Warner Bros Studios Leavesden represents a promising chapter in the nation's entertainment landscape, potentially reinvigorating a struggling sector.
