England Top Group L as Kane Breaks World Cup Goalscoring Record in 2-0 Victory Over Panama

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – England did enough to top Group L as Harry Kane broke his country's World Cup goalscoring record, netting his 11th tournament goal to surpass Gary Lineker in a 2-0 victory over Panama that secured top spot and a last-32 meeting with the Democratic Republic of Congo.

England are not going to win the World Cup playing like this. They will not get very far in the knockout rounds unless they can sharpen up. But at least they have made it into them, the dream still alive, after they secured top spot in Group L on a slow-burn occasion when the result meant everything.

Thomas Tuchel needed to restore momentum after the bore draw against Ghana in game two, to rekindle the excitement from the opening game against Croatia, which England won 4-2. The manager wanted to prove a point. It did not really happen, and for the opening 45 minutes it was even possible to fear the worst.

Key developments:

  • England defeat Panama 2-0 to finish top of Group L with 7 points
  • Jude Bellingham opens scoring in 62nd minute with expertly steered volley
  • Harry Kane scores 11th World Cup goal in 67th minute – breaking England record
  • Kane surpasses Gary Lineker (10 goals) as England's all-time World Cup top scorer
  • England face Democratic Republic of Congo in Atlanta on Wednesday
  • Croatia finish second (6 pts), Ghana third (4 pts), Panama eliminated with 0 points
  • Tuchel: "The bigger the games get, the bigger we will get"
  • Kane: "Another proud one to reach… let's hope it's not the last instalment!"
  • Panama exit with zero points at both World Cup appearances

Bellingham's Breakthrough Sparks England

Tuchel's team were better after the interval. They knew that they might need only one goal, and relief was the overriding emotion when Jude Bellingham stepped up. It was an expertly steered low volley from Bukayo Saka's corner for the breakthrough, although Tuchel's reaction was instructive. He did not celebrate. He looked annoyed.

The worries about the overall display did not melt away, the fears about how England in this mood might fare against an elite level team. But Bellingham did have the bit between his teeth, and he helped to fluff up a cushion for his team.

Kane Makes History with Record-Breaking Goal

Bellingham drove up the inside-left, a typical surge, and it was a jink one way then another which a winger would have been happy to call his own. The cross was on the money for Kane to head home, the England captain scoring an 11th World Cup goal – one more than Gary Lineker; a record for the nation.

Speaking to ITV after the match, Kane reflected on the achievement: "A solid performance again … against a tricky side … fast, tricky players … they had little moments … overall we controlled it pretty well … first half maybe a little bit sloppy in the final third … got better in the second half.

"Another top performance [from Jude Bellingham] … he's got the bit between his teeth … [the England World Cup record of 11 goals is] another proud one to reach … let's hope it's not the last instalment!"

Tuchel: 'The Bigger the Games Get, the Bigger We Will Get'

Thomas Tuchel spoke to ITV after the match, expressing satisfaction with the result while acknowledging there is room for improvement. "We did what was needed … it was what we expected … a tough match against a physical opponent … difficult to score … we were the only team to create this amount of chances and score twice against them … we were very aggressive … very careful with the counter attacks … we deserved to win."

On Bellingham's performance: "[Jude Bellingham had a] good performance again … everyone did what they needed to do … there is more to build on … you have to get so many details right … the tournament starts again now in knockout … we collect our energy … build on what we have … team spirit … fighting spirit … belief."

Tuchel offered a warning to England's future opponents: "We will step up, the bigger the games get, the bigger we will get … three days, the next match is not a problem … we love that and we are good at that."

How the Match Unfolded

The game was framed – certainly in the eyes of many England supporters – by what happened when the nations met at the group stage of the 2018 World Cup. England's 6-1 win on that occasion was built on five first-half goals. There was an expectation, a presumption that it would be more of the same, especially as Panama knew they could not progress.

This is a different version of Panama, a team regeared by Thomas Christiansen, the former Leeds manager. Their achievements are worthy of respect. They reached the quarter-finals of the 2024 Copa América and the final of the 2025 Concacaf Nations League.

Tuchel turned the dial towards attack with his selection. His idea was urgency and tempo. It was Bellingham in the No 8 role and Morgan Rogers as the No 10. Saka and Marcus Rashford were back on the wings. The headline call was Jarell Quansah at right-back in place of the injured Reece James. Declan Rice was rested as he nursed a knock and carried a yellow card.

The pickings were slim in the first half, and it was easy to feel the anxiety, particularly when Panama tiptoed forward on the counter. Their big moment came when José Luis Rodríguez got away up the inside-left on 26 minutes and banged low for the near corner. Quansah had left the space, which was not an isolated episode. Pickford saved.

Panama were compact in their 5-4-1 formation but they did not sit deep. It was not a bus-parking exercise from them. England laboured to find a way through before the interval. They were slow and predictable.

Group L Final Standings

The other match in Group L finished Croatia 2-1 Ghana, confirming the final standings:

  • 1. England – 7 pts, +4 GD
  • 2. Croatia – 6 pts, 0 GD
  • 3. Ghana – 4 pts, 0 GD
  • 4. Panama – 0 pts, -4 GD

Scotland were officially eliminated as a result of the other results, finishing outside the top three in their group.

What's Next for England

England will face the Democratic Republic of Congo in Atlanta on Wednesday as group winners. Tuchel has plenty to ponder, with issues throughout the team that need addressing before the knockout stages.

When Wonderwall played at the end of it all and the England fans joined in, it did not feel jubilant. But nonetheless, England are through as group winners, and the dream remains alive.

⚽ The Big Picture

England's 2-0 victory over Panama was functional rather than spectacular, but it achieved its primary objectives: top spot in Group L and a place in the knockout stages. Harry Kane's record-breaking 11th World Cup goal provided the highlight, surpassing Gary Lineker's long-standing mark. Jude Bellingham once again proved his importance with a composed finish to break the deadlock. But concerns remain. England were slow and predictable in the first half, struggled to break down Panama's compact defence, and were too open at the back. Thomas Tuchel acknowledged there is more to build on, and his warning to future opponents – "the bigger the games get, the bigger we will get" – suggests he believes England can raise their level. They will need to. The Democratic Republic of Congo await, and tougher tests lie beyond.
